Social-Emotional Learning with Sesame Street

We’ve extended our exciting partnership with Sesame Street by offering a collaborative lesson plan that integrates social-emotional learning with literacy instruction.

Kindness

Our new lesson plan incorporates the theme of kindness. There are many possible ways of teaching and learning with this theme. In your classroom, you and your students can participate in read alouds and shared reading, use mentor texts as springboards for writing, sing songs, watch videos, engage in role play, and have meaningful, age-appropriate discussions. We hope that this lesson plan will give you some fresh ideas to help you develop a culture of kindness in your school and community.

Writing activities for all levels

In order to include all levels of learners, we’ve suggested activities suitable for all four developmental stages of writing – early emergent, emergent, transitional, and fluent. For instance, early emergent writers can create kindness vocabulary books and record their words while fluent writers could write scripts about the Sesame Street characters acting in kind ways. No matter which level of proficiency the students are working at, encourage your students to work together in pairs or small groups. Successful teamwork and collaboration requires kindness. Check out the lesson plan for a full description of suggested ways to connect Sesame Street with WriteReader through writing.

Personalize it

WriteReader serves a global community of educators. In some countries, schools must adhere to specific learning standards. However, in other countries, standards are referred to as learning outcomes or curricular competencies. We also recognize that each class has different needs, which requires teachers to differentiate their lessons. For this reason, we’ve included fillable forms at the end of the lesson plan so that you can personalize the lesson plan (after you download it) based on your location and class composition.

We’re proud of this new project and would love to see examples of how you used the lesson plan in your classroom. Please tag us on Twitter with @writereaderapp and @sesamestreet to share your stories and photos with us. Most of all, we hope that the learning will help to promote positive growth in the children in your communities.
