“It’s an excellent app!” – Feedback from a School Teacher

This post is about a recent feedback that we have received from a School teacher at John Swett Elementary School, Martinez, CA about “Write to Read” app for kids. We were very glad to receive this and wanted to share with you all.

Using the Write to Read app in my classroom has turned my writing program into an absolute dream come true for a teacher. The app has drawn my students in and turned them into writers, illustrators and readers.

I teach a class of 30 students and we are currently implementing Lucy Calkins Units of Study writing program. When I first agreed to try out the Write to Read app I really wondered how I would possibly have time, but boy was I excited when I went ahead with the app and the Units of Study writing program hand in hand. My kids began writing narratives and stories then transferring their drafts onto the Write to Read app as a final publication. Students were able to add more details, and speech/thought bubbles to expand their writing. Then the students finished their publications with pictures of their hand drawn illustrations for each of their books. My students beg to write and have turned out some fantastic short stories already in the short time I've been implementing it. I think one of the students favorite pieces to the app is when they record themselves reading their own stories and then share the completed story with their writing partners or guests. Writing time has become exciting and fun for even my most reluctant writers.

There is one thing that I would love to see in the app itself. I would really like to see an illustration tab where students could draw their illustrations right in the app itself. This would cut down on the use of paper, as well as, store all of the pieces to their stories in one place. All in all, this is a fabulous app that is well worth the price. I had yet to find an app that would mesh easily with our new writing program, but the Write to Read app has done just that. It's an excellent app!
